I was talking to a couple of young footballers today and mentioned the 2 3 5 formation (think it was mentioned recently on this forum) They found it hard to believe asked me was it school boys only, Can any one tell me when the formations changed, what was the formation of the 1966 world cup team. Just so i can impress them with my knowledge.
thanks

When I started watching Fulham in 1969 they were playing 4-2-4. However one of the 2 was Johnny Haynes, one of the greatest players of all time.

I don't remember the 2 wingers ever tracking back but I was only 11 and so was not particularly interested in tactics!

The 1966 World Cup team played 4-3-3, but not 4-3-3 as it often is today with wingers. They played without wingers, instead having three central midfielders and three up front. They were called the 'wingless wonders' as a result I think!
